Alfier Maurizio

Maurizio Alfier is a talented Murano glass artist, born in Switzerland in 1962 to a Tuscan mother and a Venetian father.
At the age of twenty, he began working in Venice, closely collaborating with the renowned artisan Guerrino Lovato, creating decorations for stage sets and theatrical masks. He didn’t start working with glass right away, but he recalls:
“Learning the techniques to create molds for masks allowed me to develop new ideas and ways to reproduce certain details when I eventually approached Murano glass.”
It was only after meeting his wife, Manuela Milan – who had already learned to work with Murano glass from a family friend who was a master glassmaker – that he was so fascinated he decided to begin working with glass himself.
For an entire year, he experimented with Murano glass, searching for the right ingredients, the perfect timing, and the most suitable execution:
“I wanted to create something original, innovative, and of high quality.”
He experimented with techniques such as glass casting and fusing, and since 1996, he has been creating decorative objects. From that year onward, he has collaborated with many artists – including Massimo Nordio and Mauro Eraldo – contributing to their projects. These partnerships continue to this day.
A big step forward from that initial year of trial and error!
“Yes. The only way to become familiar with a material as fascinating as it is complex – like Murano glass – is by working with it. It’s a continuous process of trial and error that allows you to uncover its secrets and refine your technique.”
What led to the creation of Alfier Glass Studio in collaboration with your wife?
In 2006, my wife and I decided to take a new direction in our careers and co-founded this studio to bring our ideas and creations to life – works based on research, experimentation, and a personal reinterpretation of the Murano tradition.
